There are a number of surgical options available to the morbidly obese who have failed at all other types of weight loss – diets, exercise or pills.

Among these options are the gastric bypass (also known as Rou en Y), and stomach stapling surgery.

This procedure differs from gastric bypass in that there is no actual bypass performed, but a restrictive procedure.

Three vertical rows of staples are placed in the stomach, creating a small vertical pouch. A band is placed at the bottom of the rows of staples, creating an opening through which food can pass into the intestines.
